FC Schalke 04 and FC Twente have agreed on the transfer of Orlando Engelaar.

On July 15, the 28-year-old Dutch national player who during the European Championship always was among the starting eleven will sign a three-years’-contract running until June 30, 2011 with the Squires provided he passes the pending medical exam.

Orlando has made amazing progress both in the Club and in the National Team“, gleams manager Andreas Müller. Following the European Championship, Engelaar had expressed his desire for a permission to transfer to FC Schalke 04. Müller is confident that the 1.97 m tall left-footer will be good for the team. “He wasn’t called ‘Controller’ for nothing: He is featuring ease, overview, ball control and an understanding of the match, enabling him to become a high performer for us. Above this, like nobody else Orlando is familiar with Fred Rutten’s match philosophy.”

For in the past two years Engelaar has been coached by Fred Rutten at the Dutch first league club FC Twente, and surprisingly has achieved the qualification for the Champions League with this underdog team. No wonder that his old and new coach is fond of him. “Orlando can cover many positions and can be deployed variably”, Rutten compliments the midfielder that at his previous clubs already has started as striker, left-winger and as playmaker.

Orlando Engelaar, born in Rotterdam August 24, 1979, played for Feyenoord Rotterdam, NAC Breda, KRC Genk (Belgium) before he joined FC Twente in 2006. There he participated in 56 league matches (8 goals), and led the team into the qualification for the Champions League as team captain.

Since June 2, 2007, Orlando Engelaar is a national player with 10 matches for his home country so far. In Schalke, his jersey number will be 37.
