Rafinha has left for the National Team
Back to News >>

The dispute about Schalke defender Rafinha's participation at the Olympics rages on. Tuesday afternoon Rafinha left for Paris where the Brazilian National Teams meets. On the very same evening, FC Schalke dispatched three letters.

The first letter was addressed to the Brazilian football association CBF. It is requested to release and return the player. In two further letters, the Club turns to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and to the national Brazilian Olympic Committee.

They have been asked to issue a statement that Rafinha's violation of the employment contract is also a violation of the Olympic Charter, and that Rafinha therefore is prohibited to participate in the Beijing Olympic Games.

The three addressees have been given until noon Wednesday 12 o'clock. Should this elapse, FIFA would be drawn into the discussion with CBF in order to determine the status of the player. If Schalke's interpretation of the statutes would not be held up by the two olympic committees, action would be filed with the Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS).
